How to write and edit title tags for my products, pages and collections in Shopify?
Before discussing the tips for writing titles and how you can edit them in your Shopify store, let’s repeat why they are so important.
Writing relevant titles is crucial for a site’s SEO (search engine optimization). Titles appear on many places and the most important one is SERP (search engine result page). The titles should describe the specific product (its name, color, brand, etc.) or what content is on the specific page (e.g. collection, homepage, blog, …,) to your potential website visitors (or customers).
Are there any tips for writing great titles?
Of course, there are. Check them out:
- Length – A title should have maximum 70 characters. The length is counted in pixels, so the maximum count of characters depends on the letters you use. Titles shouldn’t be longer because they wouldn’t be fully displayed and Google would add ellipsis (“…”). In this case, remove some words or rewrite the title.
(Tip: I use this SERP optimization tool to see how the title & meta description will look like in the Google SERP.)
- Uniqueness – Every product, page and collection should have a unique title. In other words, the titles shouldn’t repeat.
- Description – The titles should include product name, variation, color or anything what’s typical for the product (or the page).
- Brand – It’s a best practice to include a brand name in each of your title (e.g. at the end of the title).
- Keywords – If you have a keyword analysis for your brand and products (recommended!), you should include those keywords in the titles (ideally at the beginning of the title).
- Content – the titles should match the content on your page.
- Besides, they should be understandable, compelling and attractive
Important note: Even if you follow the tips for writing great titles for products, pages, collections and homepage, it might happen (and it’s common) that Google will rewrite them. Many eshops and website owners are against this practice, however, so far Google hasn’t enabled us to decide whether we want Google to rewrite the titles or not to better suit the search queries (Google’s explanation). Learn more about this issue in one of my articles: Writing titles and meta descriptions seems to be a waste of time. Right, Google?
